A Glimpse into Our Research Home: The Akutsu Laboratory Environment
Published:
Following my recent orientation at the institute, I wanted to share a closer look at where the day-to-day research actually happens—our workspace at the Akutsu Laboratory (Mathematical Bioinformatics) on the Uji Campus.
If you are a prospective student or a future collaborator curious about our daily research life, here is a sneak peek into our fantastic working environment.

Welcome to Room CB312: The Akutsu Laboratory.
Bright, Spacious, and Welcoming
Stepping inside, the first thing you notice is how bright and incredibly spacious the room is. Unlike cramped traditional lab spaces, our room is designed to feel open and breathable. The excellent lighting and wide aisles create a comfortable atmosphere that prevents fatigue, which is essential when you are spending hours analyzing complex biochemical datasets or designing new algorithms.

Uncompromising Privacy for Deep Focus
For researchers working in deep learning and bioinformatics, “deep focus” is crucial. The lab excels at providing highly independent workspaces that prioritize personal privacy while maintaining a comfortable level of spaciousness.
Each member is assigned their own dedicated cubicle, separated by high partition walls. Equipped with high-quality ergonomic gaming chairs, ample desk space, and dual-monitor setups, it serves as the perfect, isolated “cockpit.” When you need to dive deep into PyTorch models or review metabolic pathways without distractions, this setup allows for maximum concentration.

A private and spacious personal workstation: an ideal setup for writing code and training AI models.
Collaborative Spaces for Brainstorming and Study
While independent work is vital, groundbreaking research also thrives on collaboration and continuous learning. To support this, our laboratory features a dedicated public area designed specifically for group discussions, literature review, and relaxed personal study.
This communal space is equipped with large whiteboards—perfect for sketching out mathematical formulas, brainstorming algorithm architectures, or discussing project roadmaps with peers. Additionally, the extensive bookshelves provide a wealth of reference materials, while the comfortable seating area offers a great spot to catch up on the latest academic papers or simply take a breather away from the screens.

Flexible Hours & Remote Work Friendly
Beyond the physical hardware, what I appreciate most is the flexible working culture. We operate on a highly elastic schedule with a fantastic atmosphere of mutual respect.
Because our research is computational in nature, remote work is fully supported. Whether you prefer to debug code from the comfort of your home, read papers at a local cafe, or train models on our GPU servers remotely, the lab accommodates a hybrid workflow. This flexibility empowers everyone to work during their most productive hours and maintain an excellent work-life balance.
Overall, the Akutsu Lab offers a harmonious blend of a supportive, collaborative atmosphere when you need it, and quiet privacy when you need to focus. If you are passionate about the intersection of AI, biology, and chemistry, this is a phenomenal place to grow!
